Our Mission: Is to educate and serve the children in our parish. We share the teaching and Good Word of our Roman Catholic faith and help the students to prepare for reception of the Sacraments of Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation.
Our Program
Religious Education is offered for students in grade PreK - Grade 11. Currently our classes run on Tuesday evenings (6:15-7:30pm) and Wednesday afternoons (3:30 - 4:45pm) for Grades PreK- 8. Grade 9 is offered on Sunday evenings at 6pm-7:30pm. Our Grade 10 program is offered on different days and times. It is an "in-home" program where we have 6 - 8 students meet in a leaders home for classes every other week. This program has been very successful. The home atmosphere seems to be welcoming and the student discussions are usually plentiful according to the past leaders of this program. This group continues together to prepare for Confirmation as they enter Grade 11.
Summer Program of Religious Ed
Each summer we offer a 2 week program of religious education for Grades 4 - 9 (non-sacramental years) This year (2012) classes will run from July 9th - 20th . Classes go from 9am - 12noon each day. We offer these classes to St. Amelia parishoners first. If space is still available we open to non-parishoners. Space is limited for this session and fills quickly. You will find forms available for this session on this website under FORMS .
Sacramental Preparation
Reconciliation (Penance): The reception of Penance is normally done in Grade 2 here at St. Amelia's. There is an informational parent meeting in October and a book for parents to work on with their children. We follow up with a retreat day and then celebrate Penance on 2 consecutive Saturdays in March.
First Communion (Eucharist): Grade 3 receive the Sacrament of Eucharist in May. There is an informational meeting for parents held in December. Parents are asked to work on a specially chosen book with their children. We follow up with extra material in class and then the children attend a special retreat day. Rehearsal is done typically a week before and we offer the families a choice of 3 different liturgies for their child to receive First Communion.
Confirmation: We offer Confirmation to any 11th grader who has completed our Grade 10 program or completed Grade 10 in a Catholic school. It is a 6 week program that begins in September. The students must attend an all day retreat, do required service hours and complete an interview. Confirmation at St. Amelia's is celebrated in mid - late November by one of the Bishops from our Diocese.
